My name is Shiloh Beaumont and I'm twenty-six years old. My father is Victor Beaumont . . . though I'm not really allowed to talk about that. I live here with my friend Garth and my little sister Rilei. She's thirteen. Wonderful girl, though lately I've noticed that she's been getting kind of distant. Anyway, like I said, I live here in this house in the Ironbridge settlement with Garth and Rilei.
Last year Rilei and I were taken from our home by men who worked for a gentleman named Hiram Jefferson. We crossed paths with Garth and the three of us have been together ever since. Garth does a wonderful job caring for us—he goes out and hunts and scavenges and helps make sure none of us get thrown out for being dead weight on the community.
But I guess you're not here to talk about Garth, are you? We're talking about me. That's about all I can think of for myself.
What is your role in the story?
I'm the narrator and the main character. Heh, it feels strange to refer to myself as a 'character' when this is my life.
What is your favorite hobby?
(This question seems to relax her.)
Oh, I don't know. I really enjoy embroidery and knitting when I can find the supplies. I love tea. I was about to say that drinking tea probably doesn't count as a hobby, but out here when its scarce—and when you do find it, its expensive—it does tend to become something of a hobby.
But needlework is my true passion. Rilei doesn't understand it because the poor girl has never been too terribly good at it, or interested enough to care, but I find that the repetative motion of threading the needle through the fabric to make delightful designs to be relaxing. And nowadays, anything that I can find to relax myself is precious.
If you could make one wish, what would you wish for?
I wish . . . I wish things would go back to the way they were before. Before we found out the truth about our father, before we were forced out into this harsh and violent world. I find myself fantasizing a lot about the days before when I could spend an entire afternoon listening to the gramophone and bathing with scented bath oils. When I could take afternoon naps and sleep through the night without having to stay at least halfway awake so nothing could get the jump on me. Back before even the tiniest creak in the house was assumed to be a world-shattering threat.
But, we can't turn back time can we? No matter how badly we might want to.
What challenges are you trying to overcome?
My fear of being out here. My own weakness. Garth and Rilei . . . they're both so strong. They were meant for this world, and I'm just not. Garth was born here—and Rilei loves the freedom. She loves running around in jeans and weilding guns and the adrenaline rush of just barely missing her own death.
I have to be strong for her but . . . I don't know . . . sometimes it feels like they would be better off without me.
