You wish to know who I am? I will tell you plainly who I am. I am a child of the gutter. I am the daughter of a whore. I am the bastard child, the last child, of the last of the Kings of Umaill - though a common butcher raised me. I fell in love with the sea at an early age. When a wealthy benefactor left me a small inheritance, I purchased a small ship, hired a crew and turned to smuggling. When I crossed one of the clan chieftains - I took his head - I ignited a blood feud. My men and I were forced to flee to the New World to start anew.
What is your role in the story?
I am one of the first female captains to sail the oceans during the time of Queen Elizabeth I. I have few gifts to boast of, but I know about the sea and have skills at sailing. I know how to lead men.
What is your favorite hobby?
Hobby? I have no time in such trifling matters. You must take me for royalty. I have ships and men-at-arms to command. Well, I do know how to read and enjoy passing the time with a book or two.
What is the challenge you are trying to overcome in the story?
It was my own pride that let me soar; it was pride that laid me low. In my arrogance, I took on men, brutish men, far stronger than me. We paid an awful price.
If you had one wish, what would be it?
To live life a second time.
Title: The Butcher’s Daughter
Author: Mark M. McMillin
Genre: Historical Fiction
In an age ruled by iron men, in a world of new discovery and Spanish gold, a young Irishwoman named Mary rises from the ashes of her broken childhood with ships and men-at-arms under her command. She and her loyal crew prowl the Caribbean and prosper in the New World for a time until the ugly past Mary has fled from in the old one finds her.
Across the great ocean to the east, war is coming. The King of Spain is assembling the most powerful armada the world has ever seen – an enormous beast – to invade England and depose the Protestant “heretic queen.” To have any chance against the wealth and might of Spain, England will need every warship, she will need every able captain. To this purpose, Queen Elizabeth spares Mary from the headman’s axe for past sins in exchange for her loyalty, her ships and men.
Based on true historical events, this is an epic story about war, adventure, love and betrayal. This is a timeless story about vengeance. This is a tale of heartbreak…
